Lay summary – Researchers are increasingly studying proteins found in blood and spinal fluid to help understand traumatic brain injury. These tests may help predict outcomes, but they are not yet used routinely to guide patient care because their role in clinical decision-making is still unclear. This review looks at how existing biomarkers could be used alongside scans and clinical information, including with machine learning, to help doctors diagnose injury, guide treatment and assess whether treatments are working.
