Lay summary – Sepsis is a life-threatening reaction to infection and remains a major cause of death worldwide. One reason it is so difficult to treat is that people with sepsis can have very different immune responses, so a treatment that helps one person may not help another. This review focuses on how the immune system becomes disrupted in sepsis and how understanding these differences could lead to better, more targeted treatments for patients with sepsis and those recovering from it.
